This article is for information only and is not tax advice.
Sprintax answers a question by default when your earlier answers already decide the correct answer. Sprintax uses the information that you entered in previous steps. It selects the answer that best matches the requirements of the state tax office.
Which questions does Sprintax answer by default?
Sprintax answers questions where the rules of a state tax office decide the answer. One example is the question about a permanent place of abode in New York. Sprintax selects the answer from your Living in the US details and the New York rules. If your details show that you lived in New York, the answer is Yes.
Why can I not change a default answer?
The default answer follows from the information that you entered, so you cannot choose a different answer. To change the answer, change the earlier information that it depends on.
What should I do if I think a default answer is wrong?
Go back and review the information that you entered in the previous steps. Check the following items:
The entry and exit dates in Step 1 Residency.
The states, dates, and places of living in the Living in the US section of Step 6 State taxes.
The type of stay in each place, such as temporary or permanent, and the type of accommodation.
Correct any wrong detail, then return to the question to check whether the answer changed.
What if all my information is correct?
Sprintax has then chosen the correct answer. Keep the default answer and continue. The answer reflects the rules of the state tax office for your situation.
Does a default answer affect my state tax return?
Yes. Default answers help decide how your state return is prepared, for example which residency rules apply to you. Make sure that your earlier answers are accurate before you continue.
