How do I track my state refund?
Use the refund status tool on the website of your state tax office. The tool is usually called "Where's my refund?". Only the state tax office has the status of your state refund. Sprintax does not receive this information.
If the tool does not show your refund, call your state tax office for an update.
How do I find the refund status tool for my state?
Search the internet for the name of your state and the words "where is my refund". The search leads to the page of your state tax office. Use only the official website of the state tax office. Each state has its own tool.
What information does the refund status tool ask for?
The required details vary by state. The following table lists the details that state tools commonly ask for.
| Detail | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) | The number that you entered on your state tax return. |
| Tax year | 2026, the tax year of the state return. |
| Refund amount | The refund line on your state tax return. Enter the exact amount. |
| Filing status | The filing status on your state tax return. |
| Date of birth or ZIP code | Some states ask for one of these to confirm your identity. |
When can I check the status of my state refund?
Sprintax prepares state tax returns for you to print, sign, and post on paper. A paper return takes longer to process than an e-filed return. The refund status tool can show no record until the state tax office enters your return. This can take several weeks or more.
Check the status after the state tax office has had time to receive and process your return. Keep proof that you posted the return, such as a mail tracking number.
What do I do if the tool shows no record of my return?
Wait for the state tax office to process your return, then check again. If the tool shows no record after a long wait, or if your state has no online tool, call the state tax office. Have the following items ready:
A copy of your state tax return.
Your SSN or ITIN.
Your filing status and the refund amount.
The date when you posted the return.
Does the state refund status show my federal refund?
No. Your federal tax return and your state tax return are separate. The state tax office shows only the state refund. The IRS shows only the federal refund. Track each refund with the tax office that issued it.
Which tax office do I contact if I filed in more than one state?
Contact the tax office of each state where you filed a state tax return. Each state tax office has its own tool, its own phone number, and its own processing time.
