When can I amend my 2026 tax return?

This article is for information only and is not tax advice.

Sprintax opens the amendment option for the 2026 tax year at the end of March 2027. You can amend once you have the documents that you need, such as your income documents and a copy of your original tax return.

Is there a deadline to amend my tax return?

The April 15, 2027 filing deadline does not apply to an amended return. A claim for an extra refund has a time limit. The deadline is 3 years from the date you filed your original return. It is 2 years from the date you paid the tax if that date is later.

Should I amend my return before I receive my refund?

No. Sprintax does not recommend that you amend before you receive the refund that you expect from your original return. If you want to claim an additional refund, wait until you receive the original refund. Then file the amended return.

What if I owe more tax after I amend?

File the amended return and pay the extra tax as soon as possible. Interest and penalties can build up on unpaid tax until you pay it.

What do I need before I amend?

  • A copy of your original tax return. Sprintax asks you for it during the amendment.

  • The income documents and other supporting documents that show the correction, such as a late Form W-2 or Form 1042-S.

  • A state amendment form, if your state requires one. Attach it to your state return.
