How do I make a State liability payment?

This article is for information only and is not tax advice.

This article explains how to pay the tax you owe on your state tax return prepared with Sprintax. The steps apply to any state tax office.

What is the state liability payment?

The state liability payment is the amount of state tax you owe, as shown on your state tax return. You pay this amount to the tax office of your state. You do not pay it to the IRS or to Sprintax.

Your federal tax return and your state tax return are separate. Make a separate payment for each return.

Where do I find the payment instructions for my state?

Each state sets its own payment methods, payee name, and deadline. Use the instructions for your state tax return, or contact your state tax office, to confirm the details.

Which payment methods can I use?

Most state tax offices accept several payment methods. The following table shows the common methods. Your state may accept only some of them.

Payment methodWhat to do
Online bank paymentPay from a bank account through your state tax office. This method is usually free.
Debit or credit cardPay through the payment processor that your state tax office uses. The processor usually charges a fee.
Check or money orderMake the payment payable to your state tax office. Send it as your state instructs, usually with your state tax return or a payment voucher.

How do I pay by check or money order?

  1. Make the check or money order payable to your state tax office. Use the exact payee name in your state instructions.

  2. Write the amount in US dollars.

  3. Write your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) on the payment.

  4. Write your full name, the tax year 2026, and the form name of your state tax return on the payment.

  5. Send the payment to the address in your state instructions. Include the payment voucher if your state requires one.

Do not mail cash.

How do I pay online?

  1. Go to the payment page of your state tax office.

  2. Select the payment method and enter the amount you owe.

  3. Enter your name, your SSN or ITIN, and the tax year 2026.

  4. Submit the payment and save the confirmation number.

Keep the confirmation as proof of payment.

Do I include the processing fee in the amount I owe?

No. A payment processor charges a fee for card payments. The fee is not part of the tax you owe. Do not include it in the amount you owe on your state tax return.

When do I have to pay?

Pay by the filing deadline of your state. State deadlines can differ from the federal deadline, so check the date for your state.
