How do I make a Federal liability payment?

This article explains how to pay the tax you owe when you mail your federal tax return prepared with Sprintax. It covers payment by check, money order, and online card payment.

What is the liability payment?

The liability payment is the amount of tax you owe to the IRS, as shown on your federal tax return. You pay this amount to the IRS, not to Sprintax.

Which payment methods can I use?

The following table shows the payment methods and what to do for each one.

CheckMake the check payable to "United States Treasury". Send it with your tax return.
Money orderMake the money order payable to "United States Treasury". Send it with your tax return.
Online by debit or credit cardPay on the IRS website through an IRS-approved payment processor. Write the confirmation number and the amount on your Form 1040-NR.
Direct Pay or wire transferPay with Direct Pay if you have a US bank account. If you have no US bank account, you can wire the payment in US dollars from a foreign bank. Fees may apply.

How do I pay by check or money order?

  1. Make the check or money order payable to "United States Treasury".

  2. Write the amount in US dollars.

  3. Write your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) on the payment.

  4. Write your full name and "2026 Form 1040-NR" on the payment.

  5. Place the payment in the envelope with your tax return. Do not staple or paper clip it to the return.

Do not mail cash.

How do I pay online by debit or credit card?

  1. Go to the IRS website and select the option to pay by card.

  2. Choose an IRS-approved payment processor and pay the amount you owe.

  3. Save the confirmation number that the processor gives you.

  4. Write the confirmation number and the amount you owe in the upper-left corner of page 1 of your Form 1040-NR.

Do I include the processing fee in the amount I owe?

No. The payment processor charges a fee for card payments. Do not include this fee in the amount you owe when you write the amount on your tax return.
