What is residency for tax purposes?

An individual's residency for tax purposes is different from the residency for immigrational purposes. Your residency for your Federal tax return is determined by the IRS regulations and you can be deemed as a nonresident, dual status resident or resident for tax purposes. For State tax purposes, the residency requirements are set up by each State tax office independently and you can be deemed as a nonresident resident, part-year resident or full-year resident regardless of your residency status for Federal tax purposes.
The residency status will determine what type of Federal and State income tax return you should file.

Sprintax is specifically designed to prepare nonresident Federal tax returns and all types of State returns.

Info: Sprintax will first determine your residency status for Federal tax purposes first and by filling out Step 1 Residency, the system will let you proceed if you're deemed as a nonresident for Federal tax purposes or stop you if you're deemed as a dual status resident or resident for Federal tax purposes.
