Your federal tax return details

This article is for information only and is not tax advice.

This article explains the Your federal tax return details sub-step of the State only form in Sprintax Returns. It explains the questions and how to answer them.

What is the Your federal tax return details sub-step?

The sub-step is part of Step 6 State taxes, on the State only form page. Sprintax asks you to enter details from your federal tax return. Sprintax uses these details to prepare your state tax return.

Have your 2026 federal tax return with you before you start. You need it to answer the questions correctly.

What questions does the sub-step ask?

The following table lists the questions and how to answer them.

Question How to answer
Immediately before visiting the United States, in what country did you claim residence for the purposes of tax treaty benefits? Select the country where you lived before you moved to the US. This can be different from your home country. For example, if your home country is India and you lived in the UK before you came to the US, select the UK.
Is the address in this questionnaire the same as the address on the top of your federal income tax return? Compare the address in the Your Address step of the State only form with the address at the top of your federal tax return. Select Yes only if they match. Otherwise, select No.
What is the filing status on your federal tax return? Select the filing status that your federal tax return shows. It is based on your marital status on the last day of the tax year.

Which country do I select for the country of residence before the US?

Select the country where you lived immediately before your visit to the US, and where you claimed residence for tax treaty benefits. Do not select the country of your citizenship if you lived somewhere else before the US.

Why must the filing status match my federal tax return?

The filing status on your state tax return must match the filing status on your federal tax return. A mismatch can cause problems with the state tax office. Check the filing status box on your federal return and select the same status.

If you filed Form 1040-NR, the filing status is Single or Married filing separately. A nonresident alien who files Form 1040-NR cannot use married filing jointly.

What do I enter for boxes that I do not have?

Enter 0 in every box that your federal tax return does not have or leaves empty.
