State only - About You

This article is for information only and is not tax advice.

What does the About you step ask for in the State only module?

The About you step asks for your personal details. The following table lists the main items.

ItemWhat to enter
NamesYour first name and your last name.
OccupationYour occupation.
SSN or ITINYour Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

Can I file my state tax return if I am waiting for my SSN or ITIN?

No. You need your SSN or ITIN to file your state tax return in the State only module. If you are waiting to receive your SSN or ITIN, wait until you receive your tax identification number. Then complete the State only module.

What if I think I owe money to the state while I wait?

You can pay the amount directly to the state tax office through its official website. If you pay more than you owe, the state tax office returns the overpayment to you later.

Each state sets its own payment methods and deadlines. Check the instructions of your state tax office before you pay.

How long does an ITIN take?

The IRS says that an ITIN application takes about 7 weeks. It can take 9 to 11 weeks during the peak filing season or when you apply from outside the US. Sprintax advises that it can take up to 16 weeks.
