Which states do not have a state income tax?
Nine states do not have a state income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. If you lived and earned income only in these states, you do not file a state income tax return on your wages.
Can I need a state return if I live in a state without income tax?
Yes. If you earned income in a state that has an income tax, that state can require a nonresident return. This applies even when you live in a state without an income tax.
Why does Sprintax show a resident or part-year state return when I am a nonresident for federal tax?
Residency for federal and state tax can be different. Each state has its own rules for resident, part-year resident, and nonresident status. They commonly depend on where you lived, how long you stayed, and whether you intended to make the state your permanent home.
Should I file a state return if my employer withheld state tax?
Yes, in most cases. The state tax that your employer withheld is a payment toward your state tax. The state return shows your actual state tax. If the employer withheld more than you owe, the return is how you claim the refund.
