I’m a nonresident why am I a resident for X State?

Your residency for tax purposes can be different on Federal and State level. You can 100% be a nonresident on a Federal level, but be a full-year resident, part-year resident or nonresident on a State level. Each US state has its own regulations and requirements on how an individual's State residency status is determined.

Info: What the state tax offices mostly take into account to determinate your State residency is your income and tax reported in the state, your duration of stay and often your intention on whether you will make the State your permanent home or not.

Important: Sprintax accurately checks all the information you provided on Step 6 State taxes and correctly determines your State residency status based on the details entered from your end.
