This article is for information only and is not tax advice.
Sprintax fixes these two dates because your state tax return covers one tax year only, which is 2026. January 1 is the start of the tax year and December 31 is the end of it. They are not your arrival or departure dates.
Which dates do I need to enter in the Living in the US section?
Enter only the dates that you were in or out of the US, or in different states, during 2026. Sprintax needs these dates to decide whether you must file a state tax return.
Do I need to enter my earlier visits to the US?
No. Visits before 2026, such as visits in 2025 or 2024, are not required in this section. The state return covers 2026 only.
Which visits should I not enter?
Visits to the US that lasted less than 24 hours.
Short visits to other states.
Report only the states where you actually lived during 2026.
How do I add a move or a trip outside the US?
Add an exit date for the period that you want to end. Sprintax adds a row.
Select the state or the Outside the US option for the added row.
Repeat these steps for each move until your last row ends on December 31, 2026.
If you were outside the US for a period, the row shows Outside US.
What should I do in each situation?
The following table shows what to enter in each situation.
| Situation in 2026 | What to enter |
|---|---|
| You lived in one state for the whole year | Keep the fixed dates. Select that state. |
| You moved from one state to another | Add an exit date for the first state. Select the second state in the added row. |
| You left the US during the year | Add an exit date. The added row shows Outside US. |
| You visited another state for a short time | Do not enter the visit. |
| You stayed in the US for less than 24 hours | Do not enter the visit. |
| You visited the US before 2026 | Do not enter the visit. |
What if the dates in Step 6 look wrong?
Step 6 reflects the US visits that you entered in Step 1, Residency Status. Go back to Step 1 and check your US entries. Correct them, then move through the steps again until you reach Step 6.
Why do I not see the Outside the US option?
This usually means that you did not report entry or exit dates for 2026 in Step 1. Step 6 has nothing to show without them. Add your dates in Step 1, then return to Step 6.
