Correct the W-2 state and SSN details

If none of the situations in the preceding table applies to you, a data-entry error on your W-2 form can block e-file. To correct the error and check again:

  1. In Step 3 - Let's talk money, open the W-2 form.

  2. In the employer's address, enter the state as an abbreviation. For example, enter FL, not Florida.

  3. On the same form, check that the SSN matches the details that you entered in Step 2 Getting to know you, sub-step About you.

  4. Go through every step, from the first to the last.

  5. Check whether the Proceed with e-file option appears.

  6. If the option doesn't appear, submit your federal tax return on paper.
