How to report a W-2 form and 1042-S form issued by the same payer?

If your employer has issued both a W-2 form and a 1042-S form for one and the same income, please make sure to report both forms in Sprintax.

Below the W-2 form you may be asked to select a reason for the difference between your Federal and State wages. The options are:

1. Income, reported as exempt under tax treaty on 1042-S, or reported on another page of the same W-2

This option covers two scenarios:

  • If part of your Federal wages are reported on a 1042-S form as you're eligible to claim a tax treaty;
  • If part of your Federal wages are reported on another page of the same W-2 form regardless of whether you can use a tax treaty or not;

2. Income, not reported as exempt under tax treaty on 1042-S

This option is used in case part of your Federal wages are reported on a 1042-S, however no tax treaty has been applied to them.

3.  Other exempt income.

This option covers any other cases except the ones described above. If you select this option you will be asked to manually write down an explanation.

Important: Please select the reason that best applies to your case. If you are not sure, please reach out to your employer for confirmation.
